The Titanic : Treasures from the deep
Can you remember the Titanic? To refresh your memory, it was the White Star Line’s flagship.
Although billed as unsinkable before its maiden voyage, the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg during its journey from England to New York. The sinking of the ship is considered as one of the greatest tragedies in maritime history, as over 1,500 people lost their lives.
Perhaps, the one lesson humans must have learnt from the disaster was that you must never say never. Finality must always be reserved for the realm of the divine.
The treasures found from the wreckage of the ocean liner were, no doubt, a testament to the people of the time and the type of lives they lived. These valuables were recovered from the ocean floor after the wreck was discovered by Robert Ballard in 1985. Among the 5,500 artefacts, were a ring with a blue sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds, a gold nugget necklace and other things.
The artefacts were raised from the ocean by RMS Titanic Inc, a privately owned company that gained exclusive rights to salvage them. They were recovered over seven expeditions between 1987 and 2004.
It is as well that there is an ongoing legal battle to bring the artefacts back to Belfast, the home of the Titanic. There is a belief that the haul is a part of the world heritage being an incredible piece of history.
