Venezuela's President Nicholas Maduro enjoys lamb, steak and a cigar at a restaurant in Istanbul

Meat may have vanished from supermarket shelves in Venezuela, it seems this has made no difference to Nicholas Maduro, the president. What difference does it make if you can enjoy the best of delicacies from anywhere around the globe, Maduro seems to be saying.

President Maduro has been caught enjoying an extravagant carnivorous lunch at one of the most expensive restaurants in Istanbul. Now, one does not need to be a genius to know that this would not have gone down well in an economically-challenged Venezuela.

The images of Maduro were posted by an apparently insensitive Nusret Gokce, the celebrity chef also known as Salt Bae, who owns the restaurant. The main course that the president and his wife enjoyed costs about £190 — equivalent to eight months’ minimum wage in Venezuela.

Maduro had made the two-hour stop-off in Turkey while returning to Venezuela from China, where he had sought a £3.8 billion credit line to avert a sovereign debt default.
