Tendai Biti(pictured) publicly declared that the opposition leader Nelson Chamisa had won the presidential election
Although he was a member of the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance, the opposition party, Tendai Biti was the former finance minister in the ZANU-pf government. However, he became one of Zimbabwe’s most outspoken opposition politicians, especially after the recent election.
Biti was accused of inciting violence following the disputed presidential election result. Therefore,
due to his perceived role in the post-election violence, police had issued an arrest warrant for him.
Tendai Biti fled to Zambia saying that he feared for his life but he was refused asylum. He was taken into police custody after Zambia denied his request for political asylum and deported him.
The Zambian authorities had defied a high court order attempting to stop his deportation to Zimbabwe. At least eight other opposition politicians are also being sought by police.
At least six people were shot dead and up to 70 were injured as the army shut down protests after President Mnangagwa was declared winner of the election.
