67-year-old Ms Zhang lost her only son to a car accident when he was 34 and she was 63. Initially, she wanted to adopt a child but when she did not succeed she turned to fertility treatments.

She spent 200,000 yuan (nearly £23,000 ) undergoing fertility treatments in Taiwan. She is now believed to be about 13 weeks pregnant.

The 67-year-old is pregnant with twins but has been refused pre-natal checks in Beijing.

Doctors have been trying to convince Zhang Heng against becoming one of the world’s oldest mothers. However, she refuses to play ball. She has appealed to local media to support her pregnancy.

She added that she had relied on sleeping pills to cope with the loss of her son and that the prospect of having a child again had brought hope to her life.

“There’s no law on the age limit for a woman to have children. I have violated no law. Why am I being treated like a criminal?

“When I lost my only child, no one cared about me. And now I have found hope for my life by myself, and they block me. No hospital dare treat me.

“To succeed with IVF, I challenged myself. I swam more than 1,000 metres every day. In the wintertime, I walked another 500 metres around the yard and exercised after the swim.”

The oldest mother on record is Daljinder Kaur, from India, who gave birth to her first child at the age of 72 in 2016.
