Joseph Kabila has ruled the Democratic Republic of Congo for 17 years
It is sad that this mineral-rich country is yet to see a peaceful transition of power since its independence from Belgium in 1960.
Joseph Kabila came to power aged just 29 in the middle of a civil war. This was after the murder in 2001 of Laurent-Désiré Kabila, his father. However, he won another election in 2006. Afterwards, his re-election was marred by controversy, violence and allegations of fraud.
Contrary to expectations, 47-year-old Kabila has pulled out of a long-awaited election after naming a successor at the eleventh hour. Observers had thought that he would continue to defy the constitution and attempt to cling to power.
Mr Kabila's close ally, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, has been chosen as the ruling coalition’s candidate. The election takes place on December 23, 2018.
Mr Ramazani was formerly the interior minister and permanent secretary of Mr Kabila’s coalition, the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy. He is included in US and EU travel bans and asset freezes on allies of Mr Kabila that were imposed in 2016.
