It all began yesternight when Hamas and other Palestinian movements launched about 180 rockets and mortar shells towards Israeli towns and villages. Considering that the Israelis had to defend themselves, the Israeli Air Force responded with more than 150 attacks on what it described as Hamas military targets.
In the conflagration, three Palestinians, including a mother and baby, were killed while 11 Israelis were injured.
An Israeli patrol on the Gaza border detected what it believed was sniper fire in its direction on Tuesday. A tank opened fire and killed two Hamas members.
Hamas claimed that its men were only involved in a training exercise and were not firing at Israel. Yesterday evening Hamas decided to retaliate with a salvo of eight rockets, two of which were intercepted by Israel’s missile defence system the “Iron Dome”. Four fell in the town of Sderot and wounded three civilians.
Israel then responded with a series of airstrikes. Israeli fighter jets targeted the headquarters of Hamas battalions and brigades, its naval commando force, weapon storage facilities and the openings to two tunnels.
Israel is demanding that Hamas release two Israeli citizens and the bodies of two soldiers it is holding in Gaza as the first stage of any agreement.
