Venezuela : Why would anyone want to kill Maduro?

An attempt has been made to assassinate the president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro with an explosive-laden drone during a televised speech in Caracas. This will go on record as being a hitherto unknown way of trying to stage a political killing.

According to officials, drones carrying explosives had detonated, injuring seven soldiers. The attack happened as the president was addressing military personal as part of an event to mark the 81st anniversary of the Venezuelan National Guard.

Mr Maduro has accused the Venezuelan opposition and Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos of trying to kill him.

Hear the Venezuelan president :
“Today they attempted to assassinate me. I have no doubt that the name Juan Manuel Santos is behind this attack.

“We have cleared the situation in record time, and it is an attempt to kill me, they have tried to assassinate me today and I have no doubt that everything points to the right, to the Venezuelan ultra-right in alliance with the Colombian extreme right.”

National Guard soldiers run for their lives


A group that called itself the “National Movement of Soldiers in Shirts,” took responsibility for the attack. It said it planned to fly two drones loaded with explosives at the president, according to Associated Press.

In a statement, the group said:
“It is contrary to military honor to keep in government those who not only have forgotten the Constitution, but who have also made public office an obscene way to get rich.”
