In China, a top Buddhist monk, Xuecheng, is under investigation by the authorities. This is due to a report that is circulating which accuses Xuecheng of sending illicit messages soliciting sex from nuns.
Buddhism requires its monks and nuns to practise celibacy.
55-year-old Xuecheng, the abbot of Beijing’s Longquan Monastery, is the president of the Buddhist Association of China and sits on a political advisory board to the ruling party. He is a revered public guru for disseminating wisdom from Buddhist scriptures.
Longquan Monastery has responded that the allegations were fabricated and misleading although China’s State Administration for Religious Affairs said that it has received the report and was investigating.
