President Bashir al-Assad of Syria
There are reports that one of the brains behind Syria's chemical warfare campaign is dead. The top scientist was killed in a suspected car bombing. Aziz Asber was said to answer directly to President Assad.
The scientist and his driver died when his car exploded on Saturday evening. Asber ran the Masyaf base near the northern city of Hama.
The Abu Amara brigade, rebels affiliated to the al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has claimed responsibility for the assassination.
The scientist, a missile expert, was said to be responsible for maintaining ties with missile programmes in Iran and North Korea, both of which are known to have directly supported Syria’s weapons development.
Aziz Asber's death was first reported by the Hezbollah-linked Lebanese television network al-Manar and later confirmed by pro-regime media in Damascus. He was said to have the rank of general.
