Indonesia's far-eastern province of West Papua has just witnessed a mass killing, not of humans but of crocodiles. Villagers in West Papua were in a state of angry shock on learning that a local man, that is, one of them had been killed when he strayed into a crocodile farm and collected grass to feed his cow. The villagers went berserk and in revenge, they killed nearly 300 protected crocodiles.
The mass slaughter was carried out at the crocodile farm after the funeral of the 31-year-old man.
Security guards had heard screaming. They later found the man, known as Sugito, severely mauled. According to police, the guards went looking for help but that the man had died by the time they returned.
Up to 600 villagers then armed themselves with machetes, hoes and other weapons and descended on the farm. They dragged the crocodiles from their enclosures and hacked them to death.
