Didier Deschamps, the France manager, has admitted that France were not the most skilful side at the World
Always the honest man, France coach, Deschamps, has stated that his team succeeded where better teams failed. The Frenchman put his side’s World Cup win down to their fighting spirit rather than the performances of stars such as Kylian MbappĂ©, Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann.
Hear the 49-year-old France manager :
“My greatest source of pride is that they had the state of mind. They never give up, never give up. There were imperfections even today but we had psychological qualities which were decisive.
“The teams which only had the best technical skills did not have enough. In the first half we didn’t have much but we were leading 2-1.
“Psychologists have their place everywhere. I don’t want to flatter myself; everyone is free to call on other people but a coach’s job is management psychology, making sure I can guide players towards the collective spirit.
“I don’t like to talk about myself but I’m going to be forced to do so. This adventure is linked to the players and staff. I had the immense pleasure to live through this 20 years ago in France and it will be marked on my memory for ever but this is still beautiful.
“What is important for the young people of today who are 15 and 16 is that they have the happiness to live the event with us. These 23 players will be linked for ever — from tonight on they are going to be different professionally. There’s nothing above that [winning the World Cup].”
By his comments, Deschamps has demonstrated his humility, honesty, work ethic and brutal realism. This simply means that it is not just about talent. Talents and skills without application, hardwork, determination and grit would most certainly not produce the expected success.
Come to think of it, France succeeded where the prima donnas of Brazil failed.
