President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi

It has now been confirmed that the senior officers who spearheaded the 2013 military coup that brought President Sisi to power will not be prosecuted.

It would be recalled that in July 2013, General Al-Sisi, the then army chief, seized President Morsi and took over the reins of government. In the weeks that followed, Muslim Brotherhood supporters ( president Morsi's constituency) staged demonstrations and sit-ins that were broken up with increasing severity until, on August 14, the army moved in.

Over 800 people were killed, most in the square outside the Rabaa mosque in Cairo. Tens of thousands of others were detained afterwards in a crackdown that seemed to have continued.

Reports have confirmed that the bill to grant immunity to officers for actions carried out between July 2013 and January 2016 was passed overwhelmingly, with only eight of 596 MPs voting against it. However, it must be approved by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is not likely to provide any serious opposition.
