Donald Trump
US president, Donald Trump, appeared to question the integrity of America's intelligence agencies when, during his Helsinki summit with president Putin, he refused to endorse their assessments that the Kremlin had meddled in the 2016 US election.
Yesterday, back at the White House, the president has conceded that he misspoke at the Helsinki summit by suggesting Russia did not interfere in the poll. Clearly, this was an attempt at damage control.
Mr Trump’s refusal in Finland to endorse his own spy chiefs’ assessments had given rise to a bipartisan backlash in Washington.
The president's damage limitation efforts came after livid Republican criticism of his Helsinki performance.
He also defended his efforts to build a rapport with Mr Putin.
