Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts will lead a team of officers to Russia to work with local police and security services to protect up to 10,000 travelling England fans
The police chief tasked with protecting England supporters at the World Cup has warned those fans about the way they display the flag of St George in Russia next month. He said the flag risks being seen as “imperialistic.”
Hear Mr Roberts:
“I think people need to be really careful with flags. It can come across as almost imperialistic . . . and can cause antagonism. We really urge some caution about people putting flags out and waving them about in public, there is a bit of risk when people draw attention to themselves and people need to be aware of that.
“We would not expect people to come to this country, get drunk and drape flags on the Cenotaph so we need to extend the same courtesy when we go abroad and treat places with due reverence.”
Traditionally, supporters gather in city centres before international tournaments and display hundreds of flags.
