Mesut Özil, the Arsenal midfielder, and Ilkay Gündogan who plays for Manchester City, met the Turkish leader in London after his arrival on a state visit

Okay, they had Turkish roots, however, the fact remains that they were born in Germany and have enjoyed the privileges and all the benefits of German citizenship all their lives.  It is hardly surprising therefore that their army of German fans were amazed and saddened when Ozil and Gundogan pledged their loyalties to president Erdogan of Turkey.

The apparent divided loyalties of the players have caused a stir in the German media. The two were also criticised by Reinhard Grindel, president of the German football association (DFB).

Hear Mr Grindel:
“The DFB respects the special situation of players from migrant backgrounds. But football and the DFB stand for values that are not sufficiently respected by Mr Erdogan.”

How can the Germans be sure that these players will give their all whenever they put on the national colours.
