The President cancelled his visit to London for personal reasons

The real reasons America's president cancelled his trip to London for the official opening of the new American embassy have now been unveiled.
British officials said last night that the visit was put off after a series of perceived slights.

Mr Trump was expected to open the new American embassy in the capital but scrapped the visit after clashing with the mayor of London and Theresa May.

Whitehall sources reveal that the decision came after the president was upset over rows including a rebuke from the prime minister when he appeared to endorse a far-right group.
“I don’t think anyone believes this is an issue of policy or divergence between our countries,” the sources said.  A US diplomatic source said that “concerns about the optics” were “part of the menu” of issues worrying the White House.

Government sources also believe that Mr Trump was angered by a series of diplomatic incidents, including a war of words over Islamist extremism with Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, that seemed to have strained the special relationship between Washington and London.

Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary, has accused Mr Khan and Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, who has been outspoken in his criticism of Mr Trump, of endangering Britain’s relationship with the US.
