Roman Abramovich’s plan for a new stadium is under threat
Billionaire Roman Abramovich's plans to build a £1 billion arena for Chelsea football club at Stamford Bridge have been halted by a family who believe that the 60,000-seater ground would block light from their home.
The family, Nicholas Crosthwaite, 69, his wife Lucinda, 58, and children Louis, 23, and Rose, 25, went to court. They took out a High Court injunction in May against the stadium. The Crosthwaites have lived in the three-bedroom house for 50 years. They are understood to have rejected a six-figure sum in compensation from the football club.
Hammersmith and Fulham council planners approved the plans a year ago but Chelsea, which has been locked in the dispute since March 2015, has now confirmed that work cannot go ahead while there is a risk that the injunction could stop the development.
Planners at Hammersmith and Fulham council will meet soon to decide what to do next.
