Three members of a gang of thieves who snatched jewels worth about £4 million from a shop in the Paris Ritz on Wednesday have been seized by Police. The robbers were arrested at the hotel after being trapped inside when security staff locked the doors electronically, it emerged. They had cleverly passed a bag containing the jewels and watches through a window to two men waiting outside, one of whom fled with the haul on a scooter. However, he dropped the satchel of loot after
hitting a pedestrian in the melee, sources said.
All the jewels have now been recovered, a source close to the investigation said last night.
The gang, wearing balaclavas and brandishing hatchets and pistols, entered the hotel on the Place Vendôme at 6.30pm on Wednesday. They threatened staff and guests before smashing display cases and stuffing jewels into two bags.
