A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN:
MACRON TIGHTENS HIS GRIP ON POWER
|
President Macron With a vow to reform parliament, place Paris at the heart of global diplomacy and relaunch the European Union, French president Emmanuel Macron has signalled the arrival of a new dawn in French politics.
The 39-year-old leader informed the combined houses of parliament which he had invited to the former royal palace of Versailles that he was cutting a third of their jobs. He suggested that he would assume leadership in Europe and move forward with political integration on the continent.
At the first hearing, it would appear that Emmanuel Macron sees himself as a worthy successor to the throne long vacated by the likes of Louis XIV, Charles de Gaulle and Napoleon.
In fairness to the French leader, however, he said his aim was to define the meaning of his presidency.
His reforms include a one-third reduction in the number of parliamentarians within a year. He further said that his historic mission was to heal the divisions in French society, unite the nation and renew the spirit of conquest.
