Sweet revenge : Ruiz's one-fight fame buried in the dunes of Saudi Arabia

Londoner Anthony Joshua outpointed chubby Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr over twelve rounds

When Anthony Joshua was humiliated in New York City last June, not many people gave him a chance of being able to come back straightaway. Some thought he should have taken a few easy fights in order to get the disappointment of the defeat out of his system. The Briton however refused to heed this conventional wisdom and immediately demanded a rematch.

The first thing he did was to go for a psychological and spiritual stock-taking in order to find out what really went wrong. He discovered that he had begun to take success for granted which led to his loss of focus and sharpness.

The Londoner decided to do something about the situation. Although he refused to fire his trainer, he tinkered with his team bringing in others who could help with his preparation for the rematch. By the time the team finished with him, he was a fit, lean machine who was raring to go.

Meanwhile, Andy Ruiz Jr was doing the exact opposite of what the British fighter did. He continued to party and celebrate his win over Joshua by binging on naked sushi girls, Macdonald and kit-kat. Hence by the time he entered the ring in Diriyah on December 7, he was more than twenty stones of flabby flesh.

As soon as the fight started it was clear which of the two fighters meant business. The Briton thoroughly dominated the contest jabbing away all night.

By the time hostilities were called off, Anthony Joshua had danced into the realm of two-time world heavyweight champion in the Arabian desert.

Joshua stuck to his back-foot game plan to pick off a clear 118-110 (twice), 119-109 verdict in Saudi Arabia

To his credit, Joshua stuck to the fight game plan. He resisted the street fighter’s temptation to be drawn into a brawl for bragging rights. It handsomely paid off.

A more composed and disciplined Joshua for the most part resisted the urge to join Ruiz in battle in rematch
