The end of the caliphate : A dream that became a nightmare

Islamic State's remaining territory has come under the most intensive bombardments by US-backed forces

When they set out, their dream was to carve out a fiefdom for themselves where they would always hold sway. However, the most disturbing aspect of their mad venture was that ISIS members thought the best way to achieve their dream was to embark on a killing spree. They had hoped to build a kingdom on the blood of others.

Many sympathisers, mostly impressionable young people from around the world, heeded the call of this death cult and quickly joined up. Thus they forsook their homes and schools and travelled to the Middle East from America, Britain, Australia, Asia, Russia and Africa. They all went in search of a strange el dorado.

Sadly, they even invoked the name of God. They said their actions were based on His instructions. They forgot that the Almighty, as the giver of life, is the only one who has the right to take it.

In the past week, the last patch of territory held by the hardened jihadists, Baghuz in Syria, has come under serious fire. Surprisingly, some 1,000 fighters are reported to still be holding out.

There are reports that tens of thousands of women and children who escaped the Isis territory are being housed in giant camps while fighters have been sent to Kurdish-run prisons.

Many of these people are now begging to return to their lands of birth now that the dream has turned into ashes.
