The Midterms : A presidency and a referendum

Politics remains a complex enterprise, more so after factoring in the fickleness of voters. You are therefore not fully sure what will happen. However, it is certain that the midterm elections coming up in the US on 6th November, 2018 would now appear to be a referendum on the presidency of Donald Trump. The polls will be a report card on the current tenant of the White House.

The last 22 months seemed to have heightened the threat which parties on both sides of the political divide pose to each other's world view. The resulting divisions were almost leading to situations of physical violence. This has been due largely to the president's style which has somehow been bereft of finesse, no thanks to his crude oratory. Nevertheless, this could be forgiven on the grounds that Mr Trump is not a conventional or traditional politician.

All the 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate are up for grabs. Even considering that the ruling party may have lost a few friends and voters in recent times, it is still not very clear how things will pan out. Should the Republicans go on to win control of both houses, it will amount to an endorsement of the president's combative approach. The more likely scenario will be the Republicans retain control of the Senate.

The president is strong and he has been good on the economy which is good for the country. Also, perhaps because of the kind of people he surrounds himself with, Mr Trump seems to understand America's prophetic destiny.

However, if the Democrats win control of both chambers, the president will be brought down to earth and be forced to eat humble pie. Should this happen, the president's re-election chances in 2020 will have been endangered. In that event, he will have to change his style and approach to politics and power in order to bolster his chances of being re-elected in 2020. He will have to tone down his bellicosity.
