George Weah has become the first head of state in history to play for his country while in office
The President of Liberia, George Weah, made a surprise return to international competition in Monrovia yesterday. The match was arranged to retire Liberia's No 14 shirt which was worn by Weah in his playing days. The 51-year-old head of state and Ballon d'Or winner was given the chance to wear the shirt one last time in a friendly match with Nigeria.
It was clear for everyone to see that, under the strains of office, the president has gained a little extra weight, more than he would have allowed in his playing days. To the delight of all, however, Mr Weah still showed some fleet-footedness and managed 79 minutes before leaving the field to a standing ovation.
16 years after his last international appearance, the striker had led the national team on to the pitch. The president spearheaded the attack and showed glimpses of the class that made him a household name around the world.
At the end Nigeria won by 2 goals to 1.
