The White House is congratulating itself after Donald Trump received a “very warm, very positive” letter from the North Korean leader
Eagle-eyed observers would have noticed that after the June Singapore summit and three visits to China, Kim Jong-un has changed his approach to international politics. Gone are the aggressive rhetoric and threats. The despot now employs verbal engagement and charm in his dealings with erstwhile adversaries. This would be enough to keep United States and South Korea hopeful. The inhabitants of the planet would also become less apprehensive.
Could Chairman Kim have been re-schooled and reminded of the tenets of international politics by the Chinese? One of these tenets is 'Smile with them while keeping your game close to your chest.'
Well, your guess is as good as mine. However, I can imagine a scenario during one of Kim's visits to Beijing where President Xi would have pulled him aside and said, 'Listen, young man, stop bragging about your weapons and start talking and smiling with them. Eventually, they will leave you alone.'
Meanwhile, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mr Trump’s spokeswoman said that Kim's letter is the latest evidence of progress towards the elimination of Mr Kim’s nuclear arsenal.
Hear Ms Sanders at a press briefing in Washington on Monday :
“The primary purpose of the letter was to request and look to schedule another meeting with the president, which we are open to and are already in the process of co-ordinating that.
“The letter from Kim Jong-un to the president certainly showed a commitment to continuing conversations, continuing to work on the progress that they have had since their meeting just a few months ago. And also, a continued commitment to focus on denuclearisation of the peninsula.”
