Trump fights back : The fear of impeachment is the beginning of wisdom

In an unusual acknowledgement of what could happen to him, President Trump has warned of economic collapse if he were to be impeached

Donald Trump's inner circle appears, for the first time, to have acknowledged that the US president could be removed. For instance, Mr Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, weighed in with a warning that “the American people will revolt” if the president is impeached.

The fear that has gripped the president's inner caucus followed the claim from Michael Cohen, the president’s former lawyer, that Mr Trump “directed” illegal campaign payments to buy the silence of two women alleging affairs.

In a veiled reference to a likely impeachment, Mr Trump said, “Everybody would be very poor” if he were removed, adding: “I don’t know how you would impeach somebody who’s done a great job.” The president also angrily accused his attorney-general of failing to control the mounting legal challenges against his inner circle.

The president's aides became even more nervous when Cohen’s lawyer said that he is ready to co-operate with the Russia inquiry on what details he has of Mr Trump’s knowledge about the hack of Democratic emails, which US security agencies say was carried out by Russian intelligence.

Uncharacteristically, Mr Sessions hit back :
“I took control of the Department of Justice the day I was sworn in, which is why we have had unprecedented success at effectuating the president’s agenda. While I am attorney-general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations.”
