Mr O’Leary has spoken about the “systematic failure in our pilot rostering function”
Without the shadow of a doubt, Michael O'Leary is one of Ireland's wealthiest businessmen. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Ryanair. O'Leary has a reputation for loose talk in the airline industry and among its regulators, however, that has not stopped him from amassing a personal fortune of $1.05 billion.
These days the only problem he may be having has to do with the staff of Ryanair. For instance, O’Leary lost out on almost €1 million last year after waiving his bonus as a result of Ryanair’s pilot rostering failure. The airline boss said that the failure led to the cancellation of 2,000 of the 130,000 flights scheduled in September and October.
The decision about his bonus stood despite record revenues of €7.15 billion, profits of €1.45 billion and passenger numbers of 130 million in 2017-18, according to the airline’s annual report.
In October 2014, Mr O’Leary penned a contract that commits him to the company until September 2019. His 3.9 per cent stake in the airline was worth €616 million as at last night.
In recent weeks the airline has faced strikes by crew in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Belgium. This has prompted the outspoken chief executive to threaten to move more jobs to Poland if the industrial action continues.
