England manager Gareth Southgate is to have his salary doubled. He is to sign a new contract that will see him paid a basic £5 million a year. However, the new salary is still modest compared to that of a top Premier League manager. For example, Mourinho earns £10 million yearly at Manchester United.
The FA will make Southgate an offer to extend his contract as England manager until the 2022 World Cup.
Speaking about Southgate, Martin Glenn, the FA chief executive, said :
“He’s really blossomed, it was fantastic seeing him first-hand under pressure situations. He fits the definition of the modern manager we want. He gets that it’s not just picking the team but all the aspects behind it and has benefited from a world-class support team.
“We’d like him to stay beyond 2020 and I think he would like that too, but we haven’t spoken about it in any depth because that would be a contract discussion and he’s on holiday now so we’ll talk about that when he gets back.
“It’s our job to make it competitive to make sure he and all of our people are competitively rewarded. But what is a competitive benchmark? We can never compete with a Premier League club in terms of pay.”
