There are reports that President Trump is about to replace the White House chief of staff, general John Kelly. The general is said to have lost influence with the president.
The frontrunners to take Kelly's job are Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget chief, and Nick Ayers, the chief of staff to the vice-president.
Along with HR McMaster, the national security adviser, and James Mattis, the defence secretary, Mr Kelly was one of three generals on the staff who were widely seen as moderating forces in the administration.
It appears Mr Trump is trying to rid the Administration of the generals with Mr McMaster having been replaced with John Bolton, whose foreign policy views are more in line with Mr Trump’s. Incidentally, policy statements from Mr Mattis have been increasingly out of step with the White House.
