The president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has met president Trump at the White House
The end-result of the meeting between Mr Tump and Mr Juncker last night was that both sides would “work together towards zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies” on industrial goods. There can be no doubt that this would go a long way to avert a hitherto looming trade war between America and Europe.
The American president added that the negotiations would “resolve” the steep American tariffs on European steel and aluminium imposed by his administration this year, as well as the EU’s retaliatory duties.
On his own part, Mr Juncker welcomed a “good and constructive meeting.” He said the US and EU would “hold off on other tariffs” as they began talks, weeks after Mr Trump had threatened to impose steep levies on European cars and described the bloc as a foe.
