The Brigade of Gurkhas has been part of the British Army for more than 200 years

As a collective name, the Brigade of Gurkhas refers to all the units in the British Army that are composed of Nepalese Gurkha soldiers. It is 3,640 strong and draws its heritage from Gurkha units that originally served in the British Indian Army. This was before Indian independence, but prior to that served in the East India Company.

At the height of the war in Nepal in 1814, when the British attempted to annex Nepal into the Empire, Army officers had noticed and were impressed by the tenacity and bravery of the Gurkha soldiers and encouraged them to volunteer for the East India Company.

The brigade includes infantry, engineering, signal, logistic and training and support units. They are known for their khukuris, a distinctive heavy knife with a curved blade, and have a reputation for being fierce and brave soldiers.

According to reports, women will now be allowed to join the Gurkhas for the first time, but only if they pass rigorous fitness tests.

The first recruits are expected to take part in infantry training from 2020. They will form a new infantry battalion and new units of engineers and communications experts.
