France are crowned world champions
It is official. France are the new winners of the soccer World Cup. Eventually, the French were too strong for Croatia and they proved it by scoring 4 goals to Croatia's 2 in the final. This World Cup also unearthed an exciting new talent in teenager Kylian Mbappe.
Didier Deschamps, France's coach thus became the third man to win the World Cup as player and manager. Like a great coach that he is, he knew how to blend the new with the old. He had faith in a mercurial 19-year-old but was also pragmatic enough to see that he needed an Olivier Giroud to lead the line.
Mbappe’s four goals in the tournament were the most by any teenager since Pele in 1958. It is another indication that exciting days lie ahead.
Now, one must spare a thought for Croatia who went down fighting. By the way, they had 60 per cent of the possession.
At the end of the day, fans will not forget in a hurry that two goals in six second-half minutes were the undoing of Croatia. Mbappe had been particularly quiet until that point, but showed why he is this World Cup’s breakout star.
His ruthless speed had taken him beyond Ivan Strinic after 59 minutes, cutting the ball back for Griezmann. He held the ball up invitingly for Pogba who shot, edge of the area, with his right. It rolled back to the teenager and he hit it, first time, with his left — like a kid playing against the school wall. Subasic barely moved.
