Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is being pilloried in some quarters for changing his mind on spending vast sums of money on players. For this, the ebullient German is facing accusations of hypocrisy.
Two years ago, Klopp went on the attack when Manchester United spent almost £100 million to bring in Paul Pogba. Hear the Liverpool boss at the time :
“If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney. The day that this is football, I’m not in a job anymore.”
Now, despite Klopp's criticism of the Red Devils in 2016, Liverpool have spent almost £170 million this summer.
The Liverpool coach repels all the accusations. He said :
“It is only an opinion in that moment. Did I change my opinion? Yes. That is true. But it is better to change your opinion than never have one.
“If I spend money it is because I am trying to build a team, a real team. Barcelona did it. You can win championships but there is a manner in which you want it.”
It is not exactly clear why anyone should be having high blood pressure because Klopp is spending. Only his rivals would be having sleepless nights because he is trying to improve a team that got to the final of the Champions League.
