Deadly wildfires have ripped through parts of Greece not far from the capital Athens. They were the worst seen in more than ten years. At the last count, 50 people have died and 150 seriously injured.
Grounds were razed in the seaside town of Mati, some 15 kilometres northeast of Athens where most of the victims were picked up.

Hundreds of Red Cross volunteers were scouring gutted homes in the region to locate possible survivors. According to latest reports, almost 200 people are still missing.
In the last 24 hours, hundreds of fishermen, frogmen and coastguard officials have rescued more than 800 holidaymakers who were stranded on the beaches of Mati.
About 170 people have been taken to local hospitals for urgent medical assistance with many in critical condition, the authorities said.

It was the country’s peak tourist season. Sadly, many were devastated as lines of cars were left torched and farms charred. As reality dawned on the people, hundreds raced to the beaches and plunged into the sea to escape the flames.
