The teenager’s name was given as Hudhayfah al-Badri in a death notice published on a social media feed of its unofficial news agency Amaq.
The death notice said that the boy was killed fighting the “Nusayriyyah” and the Russians around a thermal power station in Homs province. Nusayri is an old term for Alawites, an offshoot sect of Shia Islam. This is the sect to which the Assad family and many Syrian regime leaders belong.
The announcement specified that the boy had been on an “inghimasi” operation. Inghimasis are not suicide bombers but fighters who have indicated that they are prepared to die, for example by fighting to the death in a mission from which there is no possible escape. In some cases, they wear suicide vests, which they detonate to avoid capture after fighting against overwhelming odds.
