Disastrously, after one of Central America’s most active volcanoes erupted, a river of lava and superhot gases surged through villages, destroying homes and burning those inside. It was the biggest eruption of the Volcan de Fuego in 45 years. 25 people were killed with 300 seriously injured.

The 12,300ft volcano spewed out a five-mile stream of lava, and ash fell heavily on the surrounding area, including the capital.

According to the civil aviation authority, the eruption forced the Guatemala City’s La Aurora international airport to close due to clouds of volcanic ash which pose a serious threat to jet engines.

A child covered with ash is carried out of El Rodeo. The rescue effort has now been suspended until sunrise

It is feared that more bodies will be found today when rescuers reach the village of La Libertad

The volcano is constantly active but this time the lava changed course and buried homes, burning the people inside
