The Most Rev Michael Curry, Canon law and fire-eating preachers

The Church of England plans to capitalise on the success of the African-American bishop at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Bishop Michael Curry is the head of the Anglican church in the United States.  He became the star of the royal wedding service at Windsor Castle.  His preaching style was compared to that in Pentecostal churches flourishing in the UK.  These Pentecostal services typically feature dancing, clapping and upbeat songs.

The Church of England will now link with British churches in black communities that share Bishop Curry's style of sermons.

This means that church law will be changed to allow pastors from these independent churches to bring their style of worship to Church of England pulpits. The move is expected to be rubber-stamped by the General Synod next month.

Hear the Rev Dr Will Adam, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s ecumenical adviser:
“We saw through the amazing reaction to Bishop Curry’s sermon how the nation really sat up and listened when they heard the gospel preached with passion and without reserve. If enabling parishes to forge closer relationships with some of the most dynamic churches in this country helps bring new life and new ideas to our congregations that can only be a good thing.”
