Cops in Bielefeld are now also probing the untimely deaths of 21 of his colleagues. The said colleagues died before they reached retirement age from a “remarkably high number of heart attacks and cancers”.

Three other fellow engineering workers at the factory of ARI Armaturen, the valve manufacturer in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, a town nine miles south of Bielefeld, are off sick with mystery illnesses. One employee has been in a coma for two years.

Investigators added that the amount of lead acetate found in the sandwich of a 26-year-old victim was enough “to cause serious organ damage”.

The suspect, 56, has been working at the firm for 38 years.
