Reality TV star, Kim Kardashian West, has met President Trump to lobby for a pardon for a 62-year-old woman who is serving a life term for a first-time drug offence
Kardashian West had been in talks with Mr Trump’s adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner for months. This was after she learnt about Alice Johnson, a great grandmother, on Twitter. All her efforts eventually seemed to have paid off when she was granted a White House meeting with the President.
Johnson is in prison serving a life sentence without parole after being convicted of drug-related charges in 1997.
An online petition to grant clemency to Johnson, started by her daughter, has got more than 250,000 signatures.
“I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.”
“We are optimistic about Ms Johnson’s future and hopeful that she — and so many like her — will get a second chance at life.”
