Today, Kim Jong-un became the first North Korean leader to step foot in South Korea since the end of the Korean war, joining President Moon to herald “a new age of peace”
The historic summit held just south of the military demarcation line that divides the two countries.
This morning Mr Kim walked towards the dividing line at Panmunjom surrounded by senior officials and guards from the secretive enclave. These escorts fell away as he approached the concrete strip where President Moon was waiting. The two leaders then shook hands, smiled and exchanged pleasantries.
Mr Kim was wearing a black Mao suit. He briefly invited Mr Moon on to the North Korean side. They held hands, stepped back into North Korea and chatted there for a moment. The pair then crossed back to the South’s side.
After inspecting a South Korean military honour guard, they walked together along a red carpet and entered Peace House, a modern three-storey building where the formal talks took place.
Much credit must go to the South Korean president who created a friendly, informal atmosphere for the meeting.
Mr Moon told his counterpart from the North: “Chairman Kim, you crossed a border for the first time and at that very moment Panmunjom has become a symbol of peace instead of a symbol of division. You have made today’s moment possible. I thank you very much for your courage.”
