Khalifa International Stadium will host the opening match of the 2022 World Cup

Due to the heat of the summer months in Qatar, Fifa agreed that the 2022 tournament will be played from November 21 to December 18 to minimise disruption to domestic competitions.

Following a proposal from South America, the world soccer body is also considering increasing the number of participating teams from 32 to 48.

Increasing the number of teams from 32 to 48 would mean extending the length of the tournament. It would also mean increasing the number of matches played from 64 to 80.

However, plans are being hatched to resist the changes.  Lars-Christer Olsson, president of European Leagues, the umbrella group for the continent’s professional leagues, said that leagues had already made big concessions to move the 2022 tournament to the winter.  The Premier League is also set to oppose the expansion move.
