The CIA director's secret meeting with the North Korean leader has triggered a fresh round of diplomacy on the Korean peninsular
Without any doubt, the meeting between Mike Pompeo and Mr Kim represents the highest-level contact between North Korea and the US in almost two decades.
The meeting was a signal that the two countries had started direct negotiations at “extremely high levels” before president Trump's planned summit with Mr Kim.
It took place about two weeks ago. This was soon after Mr Pompeo was named as Mr Trump’s choice to replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state.
According to Associated Press, Mr Pompeo’s visit to the North was facilitated by the South Korean intelligence chief Suh Hoon with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol. It was intended to assess whether Mr Kim was prepared to hold serious talks with Washington.
