The last article by murdered journalist alleged links between figures close to Robert Fico, the prime minister, and the Italian mafia
Mr Kuciak’s final article was titled ‘Italian mafia in Slovakia. Its tentacles extend into politics’.
He wrote:
“Italians with ties to the mafia have found a second home in Slovakia. They started doing business, receiving subsidies, drawing EU funds, but especially building relationships with influential people in politics — even in the government office of the Slovak Republic. They owned or still own dozens of companies. Their property is worth tens of millions of euros.”

The Slovak prime minister used piles of banknotes to demonstrate the reward for information about the killing of Jan Kuciak
The killing claimed its first political victim when Marek Madaric a longtime ally of Mr Fico, resigned as culture minister. He said:
“I am not able to cope with the fact that a journalist was killed during my time in office.”
Opposition leaders have also called for the resignation of Tibor Gaspar, the national police force president, and Robert Kalinak, the interior minister. They lambasted them for failing to protect Mr Kuciak when he filed criminal complaints after receiving threats.
