A man claiming allegiance to Islamic State today fired shots at supermarket shoppers in southwest France after earlier attacking police officers. The attack left at least two people dead and ten wounded.
An area around the Super U store at Trèbes, near Carcassonne, in the Aude département was sealed off by security forces after the attack.
The attacker is believed to be holding hostages.
Édouard Philippe, the French prime minister, stated that a “serious” hostage situation was under way at the supermarket.
Gérard Collomb, the interior minister, was also thought to be travelling to the scene.
