Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said that England could pull out of the world cup if
Russia are involved in the hospitalisation of Sergei Skripal
Boris Johnson has stated that England could refuse to participate in the 2018 World Cup if
Russia are proved to have been involved in the suspected ‘poisoning’ of Sergei Skripal.
He threatened to pull out of the tournament in Russia if Moscow was shown to be
behind the mysterious illness that struck down the former double agent.
Skripal was convicted of betraying dozens of spies to British intelligence and was arrested
in 2006.
The Foreign Secretary spoke in the Commons today after the former spy colonel and his
daughter Yulia, 33, were found ‘slumped on a bench’ in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on Sunday
afternoon.
Johnson told parliament,
‘We don’t know exactly what has taken place in Salisbury, but if it’s as bad as it looks, it is
another crime in the litany of crimes that we can lay at Russia’s door. It is clear that
Russia, I’m afraid, is now in many respects a malign and
disruptive force, and the UK is in the lead across the world in trying to counteract that
activity.’
