The scourge of modern slavery

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, and the Archbishop of  Canterbury, Justin Welby, have both backed a major new anti-slavery project by the Church of England.

 It is surprising that hundreds of years after slavery was officially abolished there is now what is described as modern slavery.  Modern slavery is often defined as a situation where people are constrained, confined, trafficked and enslaved.

According to Mrs May, ''Modern slavery is a barbaric crime which destroys the lives of some of the most vulnerable in our society. Tackling modern slavery is one of my priorities as Prime Minister.''

The Home Office added that various forms of modern slavery have been identified: in cannabis farms; in anonymous flats where women are forced to work as prostitutes; on building sites; in car washes and nail bars.


People are being asked to help spot and expose signs of modern slavery in their communities.
