Photos of the Caribbean taken from the International Space Station (Picture: Randy Bresnik)
Striking photos taken from space show the awe-inspiring extent
of Hurricane Irma’s destruction.
Astronaut Randy Bresnik tweeted two aerial shots of Turks and
Caicos, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, before and
after the hurricane.
The island also appears much, much smaller, as the rising sea
levels encroach on the land.In the after image, the seabed and the
sand has been disturbed and, in many places, completely
displaced – making the land look much darker.
Posting the photos online, Bresnik wrote: ‘What a difference a
week makes.’
In another tweet, the astronaut added: ‘The beautiful sands of
Turks and Caicos churned up into a kaleidoscope of colours after
#Irma’.
Having wrought destruction across the islands, Irma is now ravaging
the Florida coast.
At least 28 people have been killed in the Caribbean, with another
one fatality confirmed in Florida.
Bresnik has been posting a series of hurricane images taken from
the International Space Station.
Bresnik also posted a photo of Jose appearing to follow a similar
path to Irma, threatening to further destroy the Caribbean. Other
photos, posted on Sunday, showed the eye of Hurricane Jose.
