A Saudi woman has been interrogated by police after dressing as a man in order to drive.
The unidentified driver wore Saudi robes and a keffiyah – a traditional male Saudi headscarf – before getting into an SUV.
Women cannot drive in Saudi Arabia. Footage that she took of herself driving was later posted on social media, where it was viewed more than 20,000 times.
Although technically there is no law prohibiting them from driving, women are not granted driving licences – which you do need in order to drive legally.
After seeing the clip online, many called for the unidentified woman to be arrested.
Security services investigated the video and worked out that it was shot at a ‘recreational facility’ in the town of Al Khafji, in the north-east of the country.
Police interrogated both the car owner and the man who runs the site over alleged anti-social behaviour.
They also questioned two women identified whose nationalities have not been revealed.
Women’s rights activists have repeatedly called for greater freedoms in the Kingdom, including being able to drive freely.
Driving protests in Saudi are becoming increasingly common. Protesters will usually film themselves driving, and then post the footage online.
