CORRUPTION, MOBSTERS AND THE VATICAN
POPE CLAMPS DOWN ON THE MAFIA
The Vatican |
Surprisingly, mafia mobsters are very much a part of church life in Italy. This has however failed to stop these people from promoting corruption and mafia association. In a move that will be lauded by many, the Vatican now considers expelling, that is, excommunicating these mobsters in order to crack down on corruption in Italy.
The leaders of the church are saying that it is time to start excluding criminals from church services.
This has come as a result of an international conference at the Vatican attended by 50 dignitaries, including ambassadors to the Holy See, magistrates and representatives from the police.
Hear Monsignor Michele Pennisi, archbishop of Montreale in Sicily, 'The group raised the problems of Colombian and Mexican drug traffickers, so we need a penal decree, a formal legal act at the national and global level.'
