The bible has been described as a Lamp. An inspired king David declared in Psalm 119 verse 105, 'Your Word is a lamp unto my feet.' Ordinarily, a lamp is an object that gives or emits light, thereby illuminating its environment. For example, one can think of a lamp that adorns the bedside table or the living room, to give illumination to these places.
A look at the life of David, the man who was moved to call the bible a lamp, reveals someone who was totally in love with the Word of God. He actually confessed at one point that he delighted over it more than over great riches. By describing the bible as a lamp unto his feet, it was obvious that he alluded to the fact that the Word illuminated where he stood before God at any point in time and what his relationship with God was like.
The Psalmist meant, in essence, that his spiritual state was well known to God and there could be no hiding place. Surely, this applies to every human being. A man's or a woman's standing before God is never hidden as it is laid bare by His Word.
It is hardly surprising that the same Psalmist also wrote in Psalm 139, 'Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, ''Surely the darkness shall fall on me,'' Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You; But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You.'
