The chances are that the pace of technological change will be quicker in the future. This simply means that there needs to be a definite plan so that displaced workers can be retrained. If this is not done, untold harm will be caused to millions of individuals. Most people expect government to do everything regarding this in order to arrest the rise of unemployment and poverty in several places.
However, we at Beulaland Blog are of the opinion that people should be proactive as regards these things. Rather than wait for government, people should always explore ways of learning new skills.
Considering the fact that governments, especially in the developed world, provide an enabling environment, people should always seize opportunities made available to them for retraining. People should learn two or three new skills, if possible.
People need to realise that it is not just low-paid manufacturing jobs that are at risk. With advances in Artificial Intelligence(AI), many jobs in the service sector will also be at risk. In many cases, those that will be surplus to requirements are those who must have spent many years in school and university.
